Only in Coastal Delaware: Summer and So Much More at L’Ete and Co.

July 8, 2019 by coastaldelaware Leave a Comment

By Jill Marie Denton. Read Jill’s “Only in Ocean City” series here.

Tucked into the Villages of Fenwick shopping center, there is a jewel waiting to be harvested. The unassuming white door hides behind it fresh, vibrant and colorful finds just waiting to be plucked from their shelves. While this jewel may have a foreign name, its appeal is very much hometown, coastal calm, but with a touch of style that the French moniker insinuates. The term “bougie beachy” comes to mind.

A look inside Fenwick Island’s L’Ete and Co.

L’ete means “summer” in French and the title aptly summarizes the style of the boutique, especially its breezy décor, white-washed furniture and vibrant offerings. Since 1989, L’Ete and Co has been offering effortless style options in an easy-to-navigate, comfortable space full of unique finds and sophisticated options. Upscale fashions for office and weekend sensibilities, plus artsy jewelry, exclusive handbags, swimwear cover-ups and sun hats are ready for your eager indulgence.

What once started as a small boutique has grown multiple times, now occupying prime real estate on the corner of the Villages of Fenwick shopping center right on the Delaware/Maryland border. This summer’s newest merchandise includes gifts for locals and tourists alike, accessories such as handbags and jewelry, and imported Italian leather shoes. Also, L’ete and Co offers vegan leather, a unique and difficult find which emulates the real thing for both vegan preference and for easy maintenance.

Upscale fashions perfect for business days and celebratory nights line the walls. From plain solids to vibrant patterns, all style are represented here, in fabrics of all weights and sizes. I was happy to see plus sizes mixed among the offerings. Brands such as Vineyard Vines, Simply Southern and Lollia have abundant offerings, as do many other cruise-chic apparel companies. If you’re in the market for a distinctive gift, Shore Soap Co. and 4ocean items are also available. Not familiar with 4ocean? Sales of their beaded bracelets benefit ocean cleanup efforts around the world, so your gift does a whole lot of good.

L’ete and Co is one of many boutiques in the area, but what sets this business apart is its focus on style, apparel and fashion. Unlike other stops on your shopping agenda, L’ete and Co is a haven for fabric, texture and print; bright corals, wistful whites, shells, stars and sandy tones. This emphasis allows L’ete and Co to concentrate on what they do best, outfitting you and yours with the best summer fashions that show your individual styles in one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t find anywhere else. Subtle or splashy, comfy or classy, L’ete and Co has you covered.

Stop in for a quick view of what they have to offer. Sales, seasonal events and special offers are usually in store for you. Their Facebook page is home to dozens of photos, contact info and new offerings. For new fashion with summertime flair, look no further than L’ete and Co!

Only in Coastal Delaware: Dirty Harry’s

July 8, 2019 by coastaldelaware Leave a Comment

By Jill Marie Denton. Read Jill’s “Only in Ocean City” series here.

Dirty Harry probably evokes a strong mental image in your mind, perhaps of a grizzled police detective on the hunt. I kindly request that you replace that image with one of a one-inch thick burger on a round-top roll, topped with crisp bacon, a sausage patty, fried egg and a miraculous sauce akin to creamy ketchup, with chipped home fries alongside.

The day’s specials at Dirty Harry’s.

It was probably quite a jump for your mind, but Dirty Harry’s Restaurant in Fenwick Island, Delaware has very little to do with beat cops and much more to do with serious comfort grub. Dispel the thought of the word ‘dirty’ in the title of the place, too. The reality of the restaurant is a clean, casual, diner-style eatery, the ideal breakfast pit stop.

Owners Ginny and Eddie invite you to their second home, originally founded in the mid-1990s. Since 2005, the pair and their seasoned, local team of servers and cooks have been operating this local staple affectionately dubbed “Fenwick Island’s Best Kept Secret.” Oops, guess the secret’s out! It’s worth the short trip up the highway from Ocean City.

Upon entry you’ll see a huge pastry case filled with items baked in-house, including muffins, sticky buns and filled rolls. You can grab-and-go, though I suggest taking a load off. But hang on, before you make your way to the host stand, review the special boards. I was really glad I did on my particular visit, since the aforementioned burger was on offer. If I’d been in a sweeter mood, the CMP Pancakes (chocolate, marshmallow, peanut butter) probably would’ve done the trick.

Fortunately I didn’t regret my decision. Boy was that burger massive, and the server, both cordially and curiously, giggled as I ogled it upon delivery. Others around me had massive meals, too, including sausage gravy-topped biscuits, seven-inch wide pancakes and half-plate sized omelets. My coffee cup was filled twice without my asking and the kids at a nearby table loved the kitschy, homespun décor, playing “I Spy” as I listened in.

Breakfast is offered until 2 p.m., a great option for those late-rising partiers in your crew. If you wander into Dirty Harry’s even later in the day, you’ll be offered diner-style sandwiches, massive steak platters and traditional seafood favorites. The selections are comfort-casual diner-style fare, perfectly American and exactly what you’d expect from a local haunt. Those aforementioned specials boards are always brimming with new suggestions. Their cream of crab soup is worth stopping in for, as is their stuffed tomato salad plate. Stuffed with lump crab, that tomato is a more than appropriate low-carb substitute for the crab cakes your table mates will likely order.

Have you been to Dirty Harry’s? What should I have the next time I stop in? And where else should I visit? I love local business so leave comments with ideas!

Only in Coastal Delaware: Death To Decaf at 3BB Cafe

July 8, 2019 by coastaldelaware Leave a Comment

By Jill Marie Denton. Read Jill’s “Only in Ocean City” series here.

Sometimes going on a walkabout results in more than just a cleared mind. In this particular case, it resulted in the discovery of a delicious frozen frappe.

I found it at 3BB’s newest location in Fenwick, just minutes north of Ocean City’s boundary line in Coastal Delaware. Fortunately, you don’t have to wander far to find it. I’ll tell you right where it is. And if you ask for Brittany Baker, one of the 3BB’s namesakes, she’ll make you a little of the same magic that I enjoyed.

Tucked into the Villages of Fenwick on the southbound side of Rt. 1, the petite café is nestled down a long alleyway of boutiques and eateries. Two tables wait outside for your coffee concoctions, under a hanging sign with the 3BB logo. The ephemeral scent of freshly ground beans guided me through the swinging white door before I could think better of myself.

The menu at 3BB Cafe.

And here is where my good fortune shined through. Sometimes life hands you a Lamborghini not a lemon. And by Lamborghini, I mean the perfect mecca of caffeine and pastry to quell even the most ravenous journalist. And though this journalist has some unique dietary preferences, they had more than a few options for me at this seaside shop.

The first thing that struck me is that there’s no pomp here, no pretention that makes coffee shops feel elitist and perhaps a little too exclusive for comfort. They have drip coffee that they genuinely take pride in and love selling just as much as their fancier creations. In fact, those beans are locally roasted in Roxana, MD by someone who works in the place and who can guide and explain the process and flavor profiles to you on demand.

They keep it simple and make ordering easy, even going so far as to display explanations to what drinks are made of right by the register. No more ordering a cappuccino and being surprised at how little “drink” there is inside.

My magical, chocolatey concoction at 3BB Cafe.

Their snacks and noshes are noteworthy as well. Sure, there are sweet pastries, namely donuts baked fresh at their Bethany Beach location, but there are also locally sourced healthier options. Bennett Orchards provides fresh produce and Kristine’s Kitchen prepares their ready-to-go salads, sides and oats. There are acai bowls, gluten-free pastries, drinks made with oat milk (a tough find), Truvia packets on the coffee station and sandwiches for even the most discerning tastes. But don’t forget, they love the basics of their menus too and will guide you toward whatever will make your day.

Fenwick is their second location; their Bethany Beach cafe came first. Their existing customers and new neighbors both welcomed them and their reputation is immediately known if you just listen to the comments of departing patrons. I knew how good the drinks were before I even tasted my own creation.

Pop by and see Jenny, coffee roaster and manager of Fenwick’s location, before you head off to whatever else you have planned. They will caffeinate you and delight you. And I’m really hoping that this article is enough to get that amazing drink I had named after me. It was a frozen blended mixture of protein powder, ripe banana, Ghirardelli chocolate and coffee, topped with whipped cream. No protein powder ‘bleh’ taste, either. Just banana, chocolate and magic that kept me going for hours.

Seriously, ask for The Jill. We can make this drink re-naming happen. Let’s make it happen!

Know of a place I should go next? Leave it in the comments!
